To claim 10 points for having Proficient English, applicants must sit a prescribed language test to demonstrate their English-language proficiency. There are no exceptions to this requirement.

From 23 Nov 2014, the prescribed language tests under Reg 1.15D(a) and instrument 15/005 are:

i. an International English Language Test System (IELTS) test; or

ii. an Occupational English Test (OET); or

iii. a Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT); or

iv. a Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic).

The relevant required scored for the above-mentioned tests are:

i. an IELTS test score of at least 7 in each of the four test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening; or

ii. an OET test score of at least B in each of the four test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening; or

iv. a PTE Academic test score of at least 65 in each of the four test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening.

Important Note:

IELTS results must be from a SINGLE test

Applicants using an IELTS result to demonstrate they have proficient English must have scored a minimum of 7.0 for each of the four components of an IELTS test. Applicants must have achieved these results in a SINGLE test.

For example, an applicant cannot seek to use the speaking and listening results from one test, the writing results from another and the reading results from yet another test to demonstrate they have proficient English.

OET results can use one or MORE tests

Applicants seeking to demonstrate English ability using OET results can use one or MORE tests to demonstrate that they have achieved a score at least “B” in each of the four components of an OET. However, each test in which the applicant achieved the specified score must have been undertaken in the 3 years immediately before the day the invitation was issued to the SkillSelect applicant.
